K searches for Deckard in the ruins of Las Vegas

Las Vegas was a city in the state of Nevada, United States. The city later became uninhabitable due to a dirty bomb going off and dousing the city with harmful radiation.

History[]

In the 2000s, a missile attack on Los Angeles was prevented. A dirty bomb was intercepted and detonated outside of the city, dousing Las Vegas in nuclear fallout, forcing the city's abandonment. Replicants were mostly blamed for the attack.[1]

The city was still considered uninhabitable in late 2032,[2] but by 2049, the radiation levels in the city had lowered to a nominal level, though it remained deserted. During this time, ex-Blade Runner Rick Deckard moved into Las Vegas to live in seclusion after working with Freysa and the replicant resistance movement to hide the child he had with Rachael. At some point, he acquired a dog.[3]

Following K's discovery of Deckard in Las Vegas, Deckard justified this decision to live as a recluse with keeping his daughter safe and free of persecution, revealing: "We were being hunted."[3]

Eventually, the Wallace Corporation tracked down K and Deckard, launching an assault on the Vintage Casino, where Deckard lived. They successfully captured Deckard, and left K for dead, though he was later found and rescued by the Replicant Freedom Movement.[3]

Director Denis Villeneuve stated that a sandstorm during his time in Sydney, Australia directly contributed to the depiction of Las Vegas in Blade Runner 2049.[4]
